About Capt. Richard Andrews

What to Expect

Capt. Richard Andrews has been involved in sharing his fishing adventures with guests since he graduated from college in 2001. An eastern NC native, he moved to Hatteras, NC to pursue blue marlin and other offshore gamefish on offshore charter boats. His adventures led to years of working out of the world renowned Oregon Inlet Fishing Center for some of the best offshore captains in the industry, traveling to various fishing destinations up and down the eastern seaboard as well as the Bahamas and Mexico.

Since 2010, he has owned and operated Tar-Pam Guide Service out of Bath, NC on North Carolina’s Inner Banks. Tar-Pam Guide Service primarily targets speckled trout, redfish, striped bass, flounder, and shad on the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds and their tributaries in eastern and coastal North Carolina.

Capt. Richard began his mountain fishing experiences exploring wild trout in the small streams of Western North Carolina. Once he discovered river smallmouth fishing in 1997, he was addicted. The passion for float fishing on smallmouth rivers led him to most of the smallmouth waters of North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. After careful consideration and adequate research, the Southwest Virginia rivers in the Heart of Appalachia became the home of Andrews River Outfitters.

Boats

We utilize a fleet of inflatable fishing rafts, mostly Fly Craft 3 Man Guide rafts. Rafts are the most versatile fishing crafts on mountain rivers, as they are best at accessing the highest quality smallmouth habitat, which is often rock gardens, ledges, and up to Class III rapids. Our raft is much narrower and lighter than most full size rafts, which enables us to take advantage of lower late summer flows, more concentrated fish, and more remote, less pressured water with more limited access.

The Rivers

Over 300 river miles across Southwest Virginia, Western North Carolina, and East Tennessee. The three primary rivers are the North Fork of the Holston, the Clinch, and the Powell. All limestone based, all rural, all full of smallmouth. On most floats, you won’t see another person on the river.
