April Pre Spawn Fishing Report from SW Virginia

The prespawn smallmouth fishing in April was highly productive for us. We had ideal river conditions with flows in the 500-800 cfs range and clear water conditions. Most outings produced 20-40 fish with several trophy fish in the 18-20″ range. April conditions have been very tame with little or no rain, so river conditions have been very stable and clear with very few blow outs. We’ll see what May and June bring. Based on the droughty conditions throughout the Southeast, I have a feeling that we’ll be facing low and clear mid to late summer river conditions in late spring and early summer if we don’t get a significant amount of rain to make up for this deficit. Either way, we’ll adjust to the conditions, catch some fish, and have some fun!
