Terminal Tackle Basics for River Smallmouth

We use a variety of terminal tackle setups throughout the season. In the summer, we have to be a bit pickier about how we match our terminal tackle to our finesse soft plastics that we commonly utilize in lower clear water conditions. Our favorite setup by far are the Zman Finesse Bulletz. Here is a photo of this weedless hook:

The cone shaped head allows the bait to slide over and through the rocks without too much snagging or wedging. There another similar hook available through Zman called the Nedlockz EWG, and it’s almost as effective except that it tends to snag a little more behind rocks and logs due to the square “ned” style head. The head itself will get hung, not the hook (in most cases). Here’s a picture of it:

Both work great. Both are very effective for remaining relatively weedless and protecting the hook point from catching anything. Both work well with a variety of finesse soft plastics such as Zman’s Finesse TRD, Finesse Crawz, Finesse Tubez, TRD Ticklerz, etc. In low clear summer water conditions, we tend to fish the 1/15 or 1/10 ounce weights. There are more great terminal tackle options that I’ll save for a later post. For more information on these baits, visit Zman’s website and online store at www.zmanfishingproducts.com.
